April 12, Patong (Songkran)

April 12, Patong (Songkran)

So we arrived in Patong early enough to avoid the Songkran madness. We came to town in an awesome public bus that hit capacity before we even left the station (I think I was sitting ON an 80+ year old man). Patong is basically South Beach and Vegas, but in Thailand (including lady boys, transvestites, and who knows what else ppl are there). And then add Songkran (the Thai New Year). Songkran is celebrated longer in some parts of the country, but it’s mostly a 3-day water fight. Everyone buys huge super soakers, gets hammered, and throws baby powder/flour/any-white-powdery-substance on you. It is the craziest thing I have ever experienced. Ever. I believe I am speaking for Pete as well.

So Pete and I battled our way through the center of the water war. The street was supposedly closed to traffic, but even the motorbikes that tried to get through were main targets. On highways or bigger roads, all cars were pulled over and instructed to roll down their windows to succumb to the powder and H2O.

So we stayed one night in Patong, playing with water guns, hanging out on the beach, and enjoying the mayhem. Our driver for Khao Lak Scuba was extremely late picking us up because of all the craziness…but scuba was worth the wait…
