Batu Ferringhi, Penang, July 1- July 3

Batu Ferringhi, Penang

After about 4 days in Georgetown I realized it was time to move on since you really only need about two days in Georgetown. I had heard about a nice beach town about an hour bus ride called Batu Ferringhi. I got the bus from the jetty in Georgetown and raced against the weather in hopes of getting to my guesthouse before the downpour started. Unfortunately, as I was stepping off the bus in Batu Ferringhi the rain began but I was able to take shelter under a tin hut on the side of the road. I was imagining it would only be 20 minutes, but it turned to an hour then an hour and a half when I decided to just make the walk to the guesthouse. At the guesthouse I met two english people who I instantly became friends with. Batu Ferringhi also had some great food stalls, which I wound up eating at for three nights. The specialties consisted of homemade spring rolls and bbq pork dumplings. For dessert, either chocolate pancakes or the best ever: kiwi pancakes with kiwi syrup. SO GOOOOOD.

Batu Ferringhi is a small beach town with not too much going on at night except for the World Cup. One night though, we met a few people who were living there who we became friendly with and actually wound up staying at their apartment for a night. Their apartment was absoulteuly amazing, on the 23rd floor of this building facing the ocean. It was certainly a nice change of pace from all the guesthouses I have been staying at.

The two Dutch guys (Erik and Tjerick) and the Irish (Kevin) who I had been travelling with for a few days returned from the Cameron Highlands and came out to Batu Ferringhi for a day. We made our way to the Kek Lok Si Temple or Temple of Supreme Bliss which is the largest temple in Malaysia. On Sunday I went back to Georgetown and met Erik, Tjerick and Kevin and we set off for Langkawi.
